COLSTON HALL INTRODUCES £5 TICKETS

The Colston Hall recently announced that they have introduced a new 'come and try' price band on many of its shows. A limited amount of tickets for classical concerts and many world, jazz and other leftfield shows are now available at the rock bottom price of £5.

Consultation with Colston Hall audiences suggests that one of the barriers to attendance the South West's largest concert hall is price. By introducing a £5 ticket band on shows promoted by Colston Hall, the aim is to make the hall accessible to all. Councillor Anne White, Executive Member for the Department of Environment, Transport and Leisure said:

"Colston Hall's £5 ticket offer is a really good idea. It will open the Hall's doors to even more people - especially to those who may have never been to a classical, world music or jazz concert."

"We know from our own consultation that price can be a key factor preventing audiences from attending events at Colston Hall. We hope this new price band will encourage people from all our communities to take a closer look at what's on offer at Colston Hall."

Graeme Howell, Business Development Director for Colston Hall said:

"We at Colston Hall want to do everything we can to make the hall a true community venue - accessible to everyone. We believe that the £5 tickets will bring greater opportunity and choice to people of all backgrounds. Perhaps you have never experienced the beauty of a classical concert or wanted to see what world music is really about but thought the cost was too great to make that commitment. Now you can have a taste of lots of different musical styles for the same price as going to the cinema."

Similar schemes have been successfully introduced at the RSC and the Royal Opera House.

£5 tickets are now available from Colston Hall box office, telephone 0117 922 3686 (online bookings www.colstonhall.org).

New internet radio show called 'The Volts Show'

The Volts Show is a net-based radio show, based in Swansea, South Wales at Morriston Hospital, which is happy to step outside the mainstream and bring you bands that haven’t been signed yet. On the show, you won’t hear bands that play stadium gigs, or play on MTV. You’ll hear the guys that try 110% to get their music heard and that play as many gigs as they can get their hands on!

The Volts Show is committed to the propagation of new bands and new talent. (The presenter would like to think he's helping the world become a better place and is using the ‘Show to achieve his goal of world peace through music).
Seriously though, there are some damn fine bands out there that need to have their music aired and the Volts Show aims to help these bands get their music heard and go on to bigger and better things.

Also on the agenda is the promotion of South Wales as a music scene that is able to rival those of Manchester and Liverpool. The ‘Show is in association with Welshunsigned.com and works closely with the website to promote bands in WalesThe underground scene is thriving in the UK.

"...There is a wealth of talent that is waiting to be tapped and a few large labels and production studios for have controlled music in this country for far too long.
We believe that music should be driven, not controlled...."

So listen in, from 9pm to 11pm on Sunday nights (or 7am - 9am on mondays if you live in Australia!) if you want to hear the next wave in music taking shape.

Monsters and Rock - Local Bands Raise Funds For Charity - Croft -31/10/04

On All Hallows Eve in Bristol this year a new monster is coming out to play. Local bands Figment, New Grand Smoking Palace, Grand Rose Band and Czars Now are taking part in a Halloween gig at local music venue, The Croft to raise funds for Oxfam and local charity Music Space.
With local businesses including Baubles and Bangles, Bedminster backing the evening through donations, local support is beginning to build, as is the popularity of the event. Tickets are £4 in advance and £5 on the night, and are available from all of the bands or by contacting figment@figment-band.co.uk.

For people who are wondering who any of the fantastic local acts performing are. Firstly you’ve been missing out, and secondly here are brief biographies of each.

Figment
www.figment-band.co.uk
Figment formed after a chance meeting between Sandy Kilpatrick (Bass/Vox) and Chris Wheeler (Guitar/Vox) during a psychological experiment in 2003. They began rehearsing together, writing songs, playing a few gigs with a different drummer, but it wasn’t quite working. That is, until Sandy invited his long-time friend Harvey Kirke to sit in on the drums for a rehearsal. The chemistry was instantaneous, so Figment as they are today were formed. Since then, they’ve played gigs in Bristol, Bath and the surrounding area as well as further afield in places such as London and Devon. Infecting people with what critics have described as “a uniquely UK indie rock take on the blues”. They recently featured in the “Ones To Watch” section of Decode magazine where they received the glowing endorsement; “...we would go so far as to say they have ‘it’, ‘it’ being that magical intangible quality all the best bands have.” As well as this, they recorded their first CD , The Offensive EP in May which showed a great deal of promise and a new EP is being completed as this is written, of which early listenings are positive, showing a progression as a band and being much nearer to capturing their sound.

New Grand Smoking Palace
newgrandsmokingpalace.co.uk
Replying to a small unremarkable classified ad hardly seems to be the most rock’n’roll way of completing the line-up to a band as exciting as New Grand Smoking Palace, but this four piece don’t need a rock’n’roll story to be interesting. Andrea, responded to the ad, having previously been the singer in Bristol trip-hop noteworthies Purple Penguin. While Markie, Tom and ex-guitarist Steve placed the ad having played together in two bands previously; Tinpecker and Limestone Monkey. The most recent addition is new guitarist Dave, a man with personality large enough to leave a mark in this monster of a band. Once united, the group created a sound described as, but not restricted to, rockabilly. Their sound is angry as it is sweet, and catchy as it is unpredictable. They’ve been hailed by Radio legend John Peel as ones to watch, and with good reason. Their unpredictable, sparkling live performances are becoming the stuff of legend as exciting visually as they are musically. Only part of which can be captured on their CD which contains crowd pleasers such as Transvestite Boxer and Can’t Stop.

Grand Rose Band
www.grandroseband.com
Bathonian four-piece Grand Rose Band site their influences as Dylan, Punk Rock, Tom Waits, Country, The Pogues and Presley. Diverse influences which can be heard in their music, from the growling country-punk vocals created by Adam (Vox/Guitar), Jim (Guitar/Vox) and Marcus (Bass/Vox) to the pounding drum lines courtesy of Alex and the infectious guitar riffs, everything is tinged by their influences without ever sounding dull or unimaginative. The boys have been playing all over the country, and would have been hard to miss for local music scenesters having recently held a residency at the Louisiana. As Decode magazine told us about them “Bristol should jump up and pay attention…”, and who are we to disregard an order?

Czars Now
www.czarsnow.tk
Having been together in many guises since the age of 14, it wasn’t until 2003 that Czars Now finally settled upon a name and a line-up. Consisting of original members Ben on guitar and Andy on drums, as well as later arrivals Robbie on Guitar, Jim on bass and Sam on vocals, the boys have been tirelessly gigging around the local area in the last year. They’ve also found time to record their CD the Casino EP, on which you can hear the interesting blend of Sams sometime visceral, sometime howling vocals combining with haunting guitar riffs.

Music Space
Music Space are a charity who are establishing a network of community-based centres for music therapy. Their therapists offer music therapy to anybody young or old, through their centres and through an extensive outreach service. Their national office is based just outside of Bristol at UWE, which is also where their training and research centres are based. Music Space like all the great musicians of our time believe that people, regardless of age, gender, disability or illness can in someway be touched by or respond to music.
www.musicspace.org.uk

Oxfam
Oxfam International is a confederation of 12 organisations working in 100 countries with over 3000 partners. All of whom share the common aim of finding lasting solutions to poverty, injustice and suffering. The work of Oxfam ranges widely from HIV/AIDS to trade, from debt and aid to democracy and human rights. Most importantly the organisations core belief is that the lives of all human beings are equal, and their work is all based on this belief.

FAIR TRADE ROCKS 2 @ Fleece & Firkin, Tuesday 9th November

After the success of Bristol's first fair trade gig earlier this year, Fair Trade Rocks 2 is coming to the Fleece and Firkin - and is set to be bigger and better than before. As part of the fair trade action week in November, and in the run up to Bristol University becoming a fair trade university next year, the university's Fair Trade and Live! societies are teaming up again to bring you a great night of live music in support of fair trade.

The Subterraneans need little introduction, being well embedded in the Bristol rock scene. With a sweet and sour mixture of offbeat melodies and attitude their shows frequently descend into frenetic, dizzy rock'n'roll dance routines, and have been attracting attention across the South of England and London.

Fahrenheit451 have been attacking audiences in a fit of riffs, politics and pinpoint lyrics echoing equally Muse and the early Manics. Their energy and stage presence is setting the bar at Bristol gigs, while the commanding, catchy choruses are the perfect vehicle for messages that range from good advice to blatant propaganda.

Los Coñios will astound, and we mean astound. Having recently emerged from a triumphant launch gig of their EP "It's Not All About Cats", Los Conios' lo-fi Pixies tunes, frantic guitarwork and strident vocal bursts can only be described as bizarrely brilliant by those who've not seen them, and brilliantly bizarre by those who have.

Fair trade is a rapidly growing movement, with more and more people choosing to buy fair trade products; it is hugely significant in changing the lives of people whose food we eat and drink by making sure they are paid a decent living wage, and can invest in their businesses and communities. Proceeds will go to Oxfam and the Fairtrade Foundation, tickets are just £3 from Replay on Park Street or £4 on the door.
